Guides / AI prompts for paralegals
Your attorney wants it by five. The AI can do the first pass by four.
Five prompts for the work paralegals and legal staff do every week: abstracts, trackers, intake, document comparison and first drafts from templates.
Every prompt below asks the AI to quote the words it relies on and to say where it is unsure, because that is what makes the answer quick to check. New to prompts? Read Your first prompt first.
Contract abstract
Use to build the file summary for a new or legacy agreement.
Prepare a contract abstract of the attached agreement as a table: Field | Value | Clause number | Quoted text. Fields: parties and their roles, agreement type, effective date, term, renewal, termination, notice address, fees, payment terms, liability cap, insurance, governing law, assignment, signatories. Write "not found" where the agreement is silent.
What to check: Notice addresses and signatories copied from the wrong party or an old version.
Test status: test pending. Results will appear in the update log.
Deadline tracker rows
Use to load dates into a tracker or calendar.
From the attached agreement, list every deadline and recurring obligation as rows I can paste into a spreadsheet, separated by tabs: Obligation | Owner (us or them) | Due date or frequency | Clause number | Quoted text. Use [START DATE] as the start date.
What to check: Rows that combine two obligations, and dates calculated from the wrong trigger.
Test status: test pending. Results will appear in the update log.
Intake summary for the attorney
Use when a request comes in by email and needs to be logged.
Summarize the request below for the legal intake log: requester, business unit, what they need, the documents involved, the deadline they gave and any deadline you can infer, and the questions the attorney will need answered. Keep it under 120 words. Do not give legal advice. [PASTE THE REQUEST]
What to check: Deadlines the AI inferred that the requester never gave.
Test status: test pending. Results will appear in the update log.
Compare two versions
Use when you need to confirm what changed between drafts.
Compare version A and version B below. List every difference, including punctuation and numbering, as a table: Location | Version A | Version B. Do not interpret the changes. [VERSION A] [VERSION B]
What to check: Missed changes in long paragraphs. Run a document comparison tool as well for anything going to signature.
Test status: test pending. Results will appear in the update log.
Fill a template from intake answers
Use for NDAs, consents and letters that follow a standard form.
Fill the template below using only the intake answers provided. Where an answer is missing, leave the placeholder in square brackets and list it at the end under "Still needed". Do not change any wording outside the placeholders. [TEMPLATE] [INTAKE ANSWERS]
What to check: Wording changed outside the placeholders, and values filled in from assumptions instead of the intake answers.
Test status: test pending. Results will appear in the update log.
